Darlington firm forms successful partnership with Teesside University

A Darlington based engineering firm have called on the expertise of Teesside University to help them to effectively respond to changes in the market.

Mech-Tool produce modules for the offshore and renewables markets, as well as offering safety solutions for clients to protect against fire, noise and explosion hazards.

In order to support its recent expansion, the firm decided to seek consultancy support to review the way it operated, so turned to Teesside Manufacturing Centre, Teesside University’s industry support unit for help.

After a review of the firms business systems, the Manufacturing Centre identified key areas which could be improved, and identified the need for a system to combine all information about the business.

Kevin Harland, operations manager at Mech-Tool, said: “It was eye-opening when the report was carried out and we were able to get pointers which would benefit us as an organisation.

“Teesside University went that extra mile and from our point of view it was a very worthwhile exercise, bringing in someone who can look at the business in a different way, with a fresh pair of eyes and ideas.

“Although acting as consultants, it’s your goals and results from your point of view which the University focuses on.”

Mech-Tool and the University have now developed a strong partnership, and is Kevin is now encouraging more businesses to get involved with academic institutions.

He continued: “The University is equipping students to go into the industry with the skills they need. As a result qualified graduates are coming through who can help to take the business forward.”

Ruben Pinedo-Cuenca of Teesside Manufacturing Centre worked closely with Mech-Tool, and was delighted with the progress the company has made.

He added: “Mech-Tool are very pleased with the outcome, we have developed a close relationship and we are still working with them on other projects.

“Although collaboration through consultancy can be short, we look for long-term partnerships and relationships.”
