Staffordshire Finance Directors up their game with CIMA

Local members and students of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) attended an event to help them maximise their impact as a Finance Director and learn from a Hays Group Financial Controller about how to be an effective leader. This event at the Holiday Inn, Stoke on Trent on 1st February, was held as a new global report identified how more businesses need the advice of their finance teams to drive long-term future performance.

Three-quarters of the world’s CEOs say more emphasis should be placed on measuring the value of non-financial assets such as intellectual capital and customer relationships to drive long-term performance, according to research from the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA). But just 51% of nearly 300 CEOs surveyed in 21 countries say their organisations currently measure the value of non-financial assets well or very well. And only 12% now turn to their finance teams for help with the task. This report is launched as AICPA and CIMA partner to elevate the discipline of management accounting, which sits at the intersection of finance and strategy, and establish a global quality standard through the new Chartered Global Management Accountant designation.

Local CIMA members were guided through “What makes a great Finance Director?” by Mark Berry, Group Financial Controller at Hays plc who looked at key characteristics, initial impact, continuously building a top-class team, and adding commercial value.

Speaking at the CIMA event in Stoke-on-Trent, Mark said, “During these turbulent economic times, organisations increasingly turn to finance professionals, & notably chartered management accountants, to help drive them through the downturn and on to sustainable success in the future.”

CIMA run a series of events for students, members and guests throughout the West Midlands and across the UK on a regular basis across the year. For further information visit www.cimaglobal.com/localevents
