Alastair Campbell set to inspire North East business

Former Labour spin-doctor Alastair Campbell will visit Newcastle next week as part of Newcastle Science City’s drive to bring the first regional Business and IP Centre to the city.

Speaking as part of ‘The Science of’ of series, Mr Campbell will give insight into what makes a strong leader and how making the right decision can relieve pressure for business leaders.

The event is designed as a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of Number 10, and aims to inspire attendees.

Joining him will be Prof Kenny Coventry, Professor of Cognitive Science and director of Cognition and Communication Research Centre at Northumbria University, who will speak about the theoretical science of decision making, using practice examples.

Professor Coventry said: “Often we have to make quick decisions based on partial information.

“Research identifying when decision making breaks down, such as in the case of gambling behaviour, has enriched our understanding of how decision making takes place under conditions of uncertainty.”

Speaking ahead of the event Mr Campbell said: “The key to leadership is decision-making and I will be sharing with the event insights about the leaders I have worked with and the way they set about making decisions.

“I hope it will have some relevance for the North East business leaders and others attending.”

Simon Green, programme manager at Newcastle Science City, remarked the event was “not to be missed,” as Mr Campbell has wealth of knowledge to share.

He added: “At a time when inspiration and business support are vital for the region’s entrepreneurial community, our guest speakers will merge the highly topical subject of decision making with science, business and personal development into their sessions, which are sure to stimulate a great deal of thought and debate amongst the audience.”
