Group Seeks 150 Volunteers for Durham Pointers Scheme
Four individuals who live and work in Durham City Centre (Esther Ashby, Anne Heywood, Giles Radford and Colin Wilkes) are looking for volunteers to help run a scheme to act as a welcome to visitors and to help find their way around the City this summer.
‘Durham Pointers’ is seeking to attract 150 volunteers willing to give 2 hours a fortnight of their time regularly between June and September utilising their love and knowledge of Durham by directing visitors around the city.
The Pointers will work in pairs working 2 hour shifts, situated in the Market Place, from Monday to Friday between June and September.
Steering Committee member and Durham resident Esther Ashby comments:
“We feel that a City with a World Heritage Site like Durham should have a facility in its main crossing area (the Market Place) whereby people visiting the City can ask for directions, both to the tourist attractions and also to the bus station, the passport office, the Courts etc.
“The City Centre can sometimes seem a confusing place to orientate round, especially if the visitors time in the City is limited. The Pointers will be very valuable in offering a personal welcome and acting as responsive mobile signposts for tourists and visitors alike.
“We would like to appeal to as many people as possible to help the scheme get off the ground – if you love Durham and have a little time to spare, please do get in touch!”
For all those interested in finding out more about the scheme, two information evenings will be held in April in Durham Cathedral and the Town Hall. Further details of dates and times will be available in due course on the Pointers’ website at www.durhampointers.co.uk and in the local press.
Representatives from the scheme will also be in the Market Place in their distinctive pink vests between 11am and 3pm on Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Easter Monday should anyone wish to have a chat and find out further information.
