Sunderland College to create best IT environment

SUNDERLAND College is investing in a multi-million pound IT system that will help shape the way its students learn.

The project will see the college introduce nearly 700 new terminals and a wireless network across all five campuses at a time many other colleges are cutting back on investment.

Angela O’Donoghue, Principal of Sunderland College, said: “Computer technology is at the forefront of innovative teaching and this upgrade is giving us the systems to support learning in the 21st century.”

“Technology has had a major impact on the way students access information and knowledge. By investing in our IT we’re looking not just at the immediate needs of the students but future-proofing our learning environments.

“We’re constantly refreshing our courses by adding new and innovative ways of learning and much of it will be supported by this high-tech IT upgrade. It will be a massive improvement for students who join us in September.

“Sunderland College has always been an early adopter of new technology and we embrace new ways of interacting with our students, for example we offer a careers advice service via Facebook – a channel our students feel very comfortable communicating through”

The college has awarded the contract to IT experts Amor Group in partnership with Capita’s IT services business, which has carried out similar projects at colleges in Suffolk and London.

Mark Quartermaine, managing director of Capita’s IT services business, said: “We look forward to working with Sunderland College to transform student learning across its five campuses.

“Our innovative solutions will create an integrated ICT infrastructure across the college, placing it at the forefront of technology and providing a modern learning environment for students.”
