16 Stockton jobs saved in furniture business takeover

Michael O’Connor Furniture has taken over a stricken Stockton business, saving 16 jobs.

Race For Furniture, on Portrack Lane, Stockton, had entered administration after being based on Teesside for over 90 years.

Job have also been saved at sister firm, Home Interiors, and the three brands will retain their names.

Ernest Oswald Race started the business in 1920, and grandson Iain Race has managed it since 1991.

Mr Race said: “I am really pleased Michael O’Connor Furniture has stepped in to save jobs in the business and ensure a long established local firm survives.

“It is an exciting venture for all concerned and I look forward to contributing to the future success of the business. Local customers and suppliers will all be delighted at such a positive outcome after the recent turbulence.”

Chris O’Connor, Managing Director, of Michael O’ Connor Furniture said: ““We have great respect for the Race For Furniture brand, heritage and people and we are delighted that the Race name will continue its association with high quality furniture.

“We will be honouring all existing orders and I am personally looking forward to continuing the Race furniture legacy. We plan to continue with the three individual brands, which complement each other.

“To breathe fresh life into the business and improve our service for the future, we’ll be updating our range of products, whilst vacating our old warehouse and moving to new premises.

“As a result, the business has announced a sale. Starting April 13, there will be a £1.8million clearance of warehouse stock.”
