GDP figures - should we listen?

GDP figures due out later today will indicate whether or not the UK economy is in recession.

Economists anticipate that there will only be slight growth or contraction, but either way it is set to have a large effect on consumer confidence. However, David Miles from the Monetary Policy Committee told Bloomberg that “it’s perfectly possible to think that the underlying growth position of the economy is stronger than that headline GDP numbers”.

So with this in mind, should businesses try and concentrate on their own growth prospects, or will the GDP figures be too difficult to ignore?
