Six projects celebrated at ICE awards ceremony

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) North East has announced the winners of this year’s prestigious Robert Stephenson Awards, celebrating six landmark projects.

For the 2012 awards, as well as recognising projects in the Under £4m and Over £4m categories, a special presentation was made to the team behind the New Tyne Crossing.

Projects in Durham, Horden, Stockton and Middlesbrough also received awards or commendations. A sixth project, conducted in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, by the North East teams of AECOM and GRAHAM Construction was also Highly Commended in the Over £4m category.

The awards were presented at the ICE North East Annual Dinner by ICE President Richard Coackley, as part of an annual visit to the region.

All three accolades in the Under £4m category involved Durham based JN Bentley Ltd civil engineers as contractor.

The winner of the Under £4m category was the Selset Reservoir Hydroelectric Scheme, in Grassholme, Durham. JN Bentley Ltd was contractor on behalf of RWE npower renewables Ltd, with consultants Mott McDonald Limited. Additionally, turbine supply and installation was by Andritz Hydro GmbH.

JN Bentley’s work as contractor on the Horden Passive Mine Water Treatment Scheme was commended for sustainability and environmental issues in this category. The client and consultant on the project was The Coal Authority.

Also commended, for technical Engineering excellence and ingenuity in design, was the Tees International Whitewater Course, at Stockton, which again featured JN Bentley as contractor, working alongside consultants EPD and Patrick Parsons Ltd, on behalf of British Waterways and Stockton Middlesbrough Initiative.

The winner of the Over £4m category was the TCT2 New Container Terminal Facility at Teesport, Middlesbrough. The contractor was Hall Consulting, working alongside WSP Group and Royal Haskoning for PD Teesport Ltd.

Highly commended in the category was the Peace Bridge at Derry, Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Contractor was GRAHAM Construction, working with AECOM, Wilkinson Eyre Architects and Rowecord Engineering Ltd, on behalf of Ilex Urban Regeneration Company.

Mr Coackley said: “As part of my visit to the North East, I toured the New Tyne Crossing and I have heard a lot of stories about how this excellent project has improved the lives of the people who use it as part of their daily routines, so it was a real pleasure to hand over this special award.

“All of the projects submitted to these awards prove one important thing on behalf of the civil engineering sector: despite the economy, excellent work is still being conducted and it is improving people’s lives here in the North East. Initiatives such as the Robert Stephenson Awards allow us to celebrate and highlight this excellent work and I congratulate all of those acknowledged at the Annual Dinner.”
