Sick call for Manchester United and City fans

Yesterday’s ‘title-deciding’ football match between Manchester City and Manchester United had a big impact on absenteeism in Manchester today, according to employment law experts ELAS.

Before the big game Head of Consultancy Peter Mooney said “whichever way the result goes, half the fans are likely to be celebrating.” As it turned out, the celebrating fans were Manchester City fans- many of whom would have been partying into the night, with Manchester United fans drowning their sorrows.

“Come Tuesday morning, the fever pitch will feel very flat for employers looking at a long list of people who have developed mysterious illnesses or have struggled to make it in on time.

“We estimate that around one in five workers will be affected on Tuesday morning”

Mr Mooney believed that more fans were forecasted to call in sick if the match went City’s way, as it did.

Manchester City are now joint on points with Manchester United, but with a superior goal difference with two games remaining.

Mr Mooney added: “Winning the title would probably be a bigger deal for City fans than it would for United, which is why we’re expecting a slightly higher number of people ringing in sick if tonight’s match goes their way.

According to the report, up to a fifth of workers in Manchester were expected to either call in sick or turn up to work late on Tuesday. Do any Manchester based readers have any anecdotes?

What are your thoughts on this issue? Should staff be warned or disciplined for their absenteeism following sporting events?
