Not just making websites pretty
Adam Blenkinsop, Head of Digital, r//evolution marketing
Your website is an investment and it needs to drive a return on this investment, especially in the current climate. And whilst we need to be pushing the boundaries on website design the business of a website is not to be ‘art’, but to make money.
Intuitive websites maintain the unique look and design of the business but still keep the customer in their comfort zone.
Anyone can take a client’s requirements and build them a website. However, a good marketing agency will spend time looking at how the website works and will make recommendations on how it integrates with online and offline marketing.
Adam Blenkinsop, Head of Digital at r//evolution, says: “When someone visits your website you have less than ten seconds to capture their interest. As we all know, a website needs to look professional and portray the business as it wants to be seen to its audiences.
“However, a website becomes intuitive by effortlessly giving the user what they want. If you have done your homework and you have a solid web strategy in place, then the user benefits and you have an effective site that achieves your objectives.
“I advise my clients, whether it is an e-commerce site for Otterburn Life or a brochure site for Business & Enterprise Group, a website must have functionality as well as being intuitive. For our clients we are using technologies that didn’t exist 12 months ago to produce greater functionality for clients – whilst still allowing them to be designed well.
“One piece of advice we give clients is that they can have the best looking website in the world, but if people can’t find the site or it doesn’t work to generate income then you might as well not bother. This is why optimisation is key, both in terms of SEO so that customers can find you and conversion rate optimisation so that you make sure you maximise each visit to the site.
“This is why designers and developers must work together throughout the web building process to ensure that design and functionality complement each other.
“Typically lots of businesses get a website built without thinking about the long term benefits of the site, how they want to use it, how intuitive it is for visitors and how you will drive traffic to the site this is what ensures r//esults marketing.”
