UK manufacturing output rises in March
UK manufacturing output saw a rise in March, while overall industrial output fell, the latest Index of Production shows.
The figures from the Office of National Statistics show manufacturing output rose by 0.9%, while the broader measurement of production fell by 0.3%.
Basic pharmaceutical products and preparations industries, which rose 6.1%, and the manufacture of electrical equipment industries at 12.1%, were the largest upward drivers to the quarter.
Andrew Johnson, Senior Economist at EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation said: “Today’s figures paint a slightly improved picture for manufacturing and bring the official data closer to a range of business surveys.
“This suggests manufacturing is in a better position at the start of this year than it was at the end of 2011.
“However, the challenges clearly remain formidable, especially with regard to major European markets.
“Whilst the mixed picture across individual sectors suggests we are some way yet from establishing a strong and consistent growth path.”
Mark Lee, head of manufacturing at Barclays, said: “With the future of the euro zone back in the spotlight after a turbulent weekend, UK manufacturers will be wary of any further uncertainly that this will bring.
“Export weakness across the region will start having an impact on the UK manufacturing sector as investment plans will be put on hold, but strength continues to be seen in various sub-sectors.”
