Smart Phones, Social Networks and Organisation

Mobile smart phones are greatly increasing in popularity and the need for computers is declining fast; this means knowing how to use a smart phone to help manage and develop a business is crucial.

Businesses can use applications to manage social networks and help keep organised as well as create applications to promote the business and interact with ‘fans’ and customers.

Managing social networks

Setting up social network pages like Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr can be key for a business gaining a strong following. Social networks are used by over one billion people worldwide and can be easily accessed from computers and mobile smart phones. Social networks can be used to promote a business, product or campaign by providing ‘fans’ with updates, exclusive content and competitions.

Most smart phones offer a variety of social network applications which allow the user to manage their business’s social network profile and their personal social network profile. Businesses can use such applications to update ‘fans’ with anything from a simple status update about where they are, to a detailed blog entry about their latest piece of work.

On June 12th leading electronics corporation, Apple, unveiled their plans for their new mobile operating system, iOS 6. iOS 6, which is scheduled for an Autumn release, is the newest mobile operating system for the iPhone, iPod and iPad. It offers the user many new features, one of which is Facebook integration which will allow the user to instantly update their Facebook status, share their photos, post their location and interact with Facebook fans on their iPhone, iPod or iPad.

iOS 5 (Apple’s current mobile operating system) currently offers Twitter integration, meaning that when iOS 6 is released in Autumn 2012 users can be even more involved with social networks on their Apple device. Businesses can take advantage of this and easily keep in contact with ‘fans’ and customers.

Smart phones and organisation

Mobile smart phones can help the user’s organisation skills with applications like notepads, reminders, alarms, calendars and maps; this could greatly help manage a business as everything a business needs could be stored on a mobile smart phone.

Of course, one of the most obvious and greatest benefits of using a smart phone is the portability. Smart phones can fit into a pocket unlike laptops, tablets and computers; this provides a huge advantage for businesses as laptops won’t necessarily be required when travelling due to the fact that smart phones contain most of the essential features contained in a laptop or computer.

Email is rapidly becoming one of the most popular ways to communicate, which means having access to email is vital. Smart phones allow the user to view, read and send emails regardless of geographical location providing they have a valid internet connection; this means that keeping in touch with clients and colleagues is easier than ever.

Cloud technology allows users to save and store documents on the internet; this means that if a laptop or mobile device is lost, stolen or broke the files will be stored and protected online. Smart phones are beginning to integrate cloud technology into their operating system. For example, Apple offer users with an iPhone, iPod or iPad with 5 Gigabytes free cloud storage space and the option to automatically back up documents and settings on the cloud server. Android smart phones allow users to connect to their Google account and back up the contents of their phone onto Google’s cloud server. If documents break or get lost it could take hours to recreate them so protecting the documents on cloud servers or hardware (like USB Flash Drives) can ensure that work will be protected regardless of what happens to the original copy.

Social networks, organisation and document protection are important in a business and the ability to easily manage these on a smart phone provides greater efficiency within a business.
