Digital Brazil by Numbers

With unemployment at historic lows, wages increasing and credit available, online shopping is becoming a habit of an emerging Brazilian middle class that numbers almost 100 million people.

Let’s break it down:

- Brazil is the 5th largest internet market in the world

- 40% of the population is regularly connected

- Brazilians are spending $13bn USD online per year

- Broadband access costs an average of $27 per month. India averages $30, while China costs just $10.

- To connect more of the country, the government has promised to invest $500m USD per year until 2014 as part of its National Broadband Plan.

The picture’s just as rosy in the mobile space:

- There are 116 mobile devices for every 100 people in Brazil

- 42% of mobile web traffic in Brazil comes from tablets, while 55% comes from mobile phones

- In 2011, Brazil accounted for more than one third of the sales value of tablets in Latin America

- By 2015, at least 50% of Brazil’s population will own a mobile device with internet access

- 3G penetration is at 17%, representing year-on-year growth of 99%

- The government is preparing to introduce 4G, ahead of the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics

And in the social space?

- There are almost 50m Facebook users in Brazil, making it the world’s number-two user of the social network

- There are over 33m Brazilian Twitter accounts, relegating Japan, with almost 30m accounts, into third position worldwide
