Exeter triumph at CIMA UK Global Business Final

The Indivisibles, a team from the University of Exeter, have won the UK final of the CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) Global Business Challenge (GBC) 2012, winning a place to represent the UK at the global final in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on 23 and 24 July.

The GBC is an international business management competition designed to bring out the very best in the next generation of business leaders. They will be joined by teams from 22 countries including South Africa, New Zealand, Nepal and Malaysia. The UK competition has been organised in partnership with Barclays and sponsored by Tesco and Milkround.

Over 300 students registered to take part in the UK leg of the competition, the Indivisibles from Exeter University along with three other teams were shortlisted to take part in the UK final on 15 June. In a twist, they faced a rival team from their university as well as teams from Regent’s College (European Business School) and Middlesex University.

The team was mentored by Chie Min Teng, a lecturer at the University of Exeter Business School, who said of their achievement:

“We are delighted that the Indivisibles have won the UK final of this prestigious global competition. They are a group of wise, young minds who are committed to excelling as business leaders. The fact that the university managed to get two teams to the final is a testament to the quality and dedication of our students. We will do our very best to hopefully capture the world crown.”

David Rowsby, Director of Europe at CIMA, added: “I extend my congratulations to the Indivisibles on their fantastic achievement in winning the UK final of the 2012 CIMA GBC. The standard of this year’s competition was higher than ever, indeed in the final reckoning it came down to just one point. CIMA believe there is a great pool of talent in the UK and look forward to seeing the business leaders of tomorrow showcasing their skills at the global final. Many of the world’s most senior business leaders qualify with CIMA and we currently have over 195,000 members and students in 176 countries. I would like to wish the team every success at the global final in July.”

The CIMA GBC provides students with a great opportunity to test the depth of their financial knowledge and expand upon their business acumen. The UK final offered the finalists, as well as undergraduates in the audience, an opportunity to network with graduate employers including Barclays, Tesco, News International, Amazon, KPMG, P&G, Unilever, Britvic and Siemens. At the global final the regional finalists will present a business case to an audience of CIMA delegates and a judging panel of prestigious experts. It has previously led to internship and job opportunities with numerous reputable organisations. CIMA offers an international qualification in management accountancy and is the world’s leading and largest professional body in this field.
