£22m planning bid submitted by Eldon Square
Capital Shopping Centres have submitted a planning application for improvements to Eldon Square, as part of a £22 million programme of refurbishments to the centre.
Plans include the reconfiguration and redevelopment of the entrance and adjoining retail unit. and the extension of the roof canopy over the new entrance.
Joint owners CSC and Newcastle City Council now hope that the full modernisation programme will enhance the attractiveness of units for retailers, providing an enhanced sense of “arrival” for the 36 million shoppers who visit the centre annually.
Martin Breeden, Asset Management Director at CSC said: “The scheme will add to the vibrancy and vitality of the city centre and build on Newcastle’s success as one of the UK’s best retail cities.”
This news follows the announcement made in December 2011 that the owners plan to enhance existing malls through ceiling, entrance and interior enhancements.
Eldon Square is one of the largest city centre shopping centres in the UK, occupying 1.35m sq ft with 151 stores, and is the premier retail pitch in Newcastle City Centre.
A decision on planning is expected by mid-August.
