A savvy approach for local youth practitioners
The voluntary sector is a few clicks behind when it comes to social media, according to a new survey*.
The research suggests that charities should be expanding their use of social media from a communication and fundraising tool to one that delivers services. It also found that social media is now an essential source of support and information for people – particularly those from younger generations.
Aware of the challenges presented by social media - particularly for those who work with young people - the team here at the Regional Youth Work Unit, a charity based in Gateshead that works across the region to improve the lives of young people, launched a pilot programme called Net Assets in 2011.
The programme has explored the variety of ways in which social media and emerging digital technologies can support the development of youth work, as well as the empowerment of young people in the North East. This month sees the culmination of the project with a seminar aimed at youth workers, students and academics in the region.
Leon Mexter, chief executive at the Regional Youth Work Unit – North East, comments: “We hope to de-mystify the world of social media and help youth practitioners in our region gain a better understanding of the practical issues of using these networks – as well as the benefits they can present.
“Social media is becoming increasingly popular among young people, which means the youth sector needs to embrace, and not shy away, from this evolving technology.”
The seminar, which takes place on Tuesday 17th July 2012, will be an opportunity for the Net Assets team to share their findings from the project and discuss the role that social media can play in youth work practice. Attendees will hear from guest speaker Liz Robson, a visiting fellow at Newcastle University, and can also share their own experiences in a series of workshops.
The event takes place at theJurys Inn on South Shore Road, Gateshead between9am – 1.30pm and is free. Those interested in attending should contact: Alexis Forsyth on: [alexis@rywu.org.uk](mailto:alexis@rywu.org.uk“ target=) to book their place.
