Retail Sales Boosted in June

People have been spending more of their hard-earned cash last month, according to statistics released by ONS today.

In June 2012 retail sales volumes have been up by an estimated 1.6 percent compared with the same time last year.

Figures show that in a 5 week period up to the end of June, £32.7 billion was spent; £6.3 billion more than the previous month.

Experts are putting this rise down to the poor weather conditions forcing shops to discount summer stock, as the public reach for their cagoules and wellies, as well as an inflation drop.

The head of North West Consumer Business at Deloitte, Myles Duckworth, said:

“Today’s retail figures can primarily be attributed to the fall in inflation, coupled with the early arrival of the summer sales.

The non-food sector has, for the past 25-30 years, been fuelled by volume growth as consumers bought more year-on-year.
