Exeter team closer to Global Businesses Challenge victory

The Indivisibles, a team from Exeter University who were recently national winners of the UK leg of the CIMA Global Business Challenge (GBC) 2012, in partnership with Barclays, has been named this morning - after round one of the competition being held in Sri Lanka - as one of six final teams proceeding to the final round.

Kate Beattier, Adam Broardbent, Ronald Liong and Ben White impressed the judges with their business detailed presentation and rigorous answers to questions by the judges.

The competition hosted by CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants), for undergraduates with a passion for business, is in its sixth year. A record number of twenty two teams from around the world competed yesterday, representing their respective countries as national winners in the first and knock-out round of this global final.

Other teams making it to round two of the global finals are: New Zealand, Poland, Australia, South Africa and the Middle East.

Round two kicks off this afternoon (Tuesday, July 24 2012) at Mt Lavinia Hotel with the six teams being presented with a new element in the same case study on which the global competition was based. The remaining teams, each consisting of four undergraduates, must develop and present revised recommendations to the judges based on the new set of business variables. This is designed to test their ability to respond to change, their flexibility in approach, critical thinking and ability to problem solve under pressure. The teams will be given four hours to come up with new recommendations and before presenting to the judges.

At the same time this morning, the judges named the three finalists in the individual category for GBC Future Business Leader as Sizwe Nxumalo from South Africa, Julie Niblock from Ireland and Prachi Mehta from the Middle East team. These individuals were selected from within all the competing teams today as individuals with presence and the ability to be a future business leader. From the original 88 participants competing in 22 different teams, the three will face tough interviews with Andrew Harding, MD, CIMA; Szilard Brenner, Internal Audit Manager, South East Asia, Tesco; and Deepesh Lad FCMA, CGMA of Barclays. CIMA UK Marketing Manager, Karen Smith stated:

“We are thrilled that the UK team has made it through to the final round. CIMA UK and their fellow students are behind them all the way. I would also like to also like to congratulate every team that made it to the global final. They all have the potential to shape business in the future. This competition, besides highlighting global business talent, also serves to provide encouragement to young business people to follow their dreams.”

CIMA would like to thank our global partner Barclays, global final partners Unilever Sri Lanka Limited and Achievers Lanka Business School and official airline Sri Lanka Airlines for their support; Mount Lavinia Hotel for hosting the final and all the judges and of course the army of student volunteers from across Sri Lanka whose hard work is ensuring a successful event.“
