North East firm’s Olympic showdown
A Gateshead-based digital agency that has played a role in the training of Team GB is set to see its hard work realised at London 2012 this week.
AYO Digital developed the timing software that has been used by Great Britain’s Olympic BMX Team during its intensive training regime at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester in the run-up to the games.
Having made its debut at the Beijing 2008 Games, the fast and furious sport of BMX is making only its second Olympic appearance at the London 2012 Games and is the most recent spot to have been added to the programme.
Rob Mathieson, managing director at AYO Digital, said: “We are very excited to see Team GB’s BMX stars hit the brand new track next to the Velodrome this week having assisted in the team’s preparation over the last year.
“Our team in Gateshead created some complex software in conjunction with timing equipment expert HS Sports in Manchester in order to help the BMX Team clock accurate timings as part of their training for London 2012.
“Like everyone else, we’ve been cheering on Team GB but the BMX event will be extra special for us given we have played our part in supporting the team. We’ll even have TV screens up in our office over the next few days to make sure we don’t miss any of their performances!”
Fast-growing AYO Digital’s headquarters are based at the Northern Design Centre in Gateshead and the company now has a second site in Manchester. The company has doubled its staff numbers from 10 to over 20 in the last year.
The employment opportunities it has created attracted the attention of Royalty with His Royal Highness, The Duke of York KG, visiting the company’s offices early in the summer.
The digital company specialises in delivering business solutions for web and mobile devices, in addition to complex and highly technical web development projects such as this project.
Established in 2008 by Rob Mathieson, Tony Olanipekun and Kevin Reece, AYO Media works with SMEs and large organisations nationally, across a number of sectors including manufacturing, utilities, property and retail.
