10 ways to make your business environmentally friendly

Dom O’Neill from Mind Your Own Business explains 10 top ways to make y****our business environmentally friendly

1. Turning off equipment when it’s not being used. If you don’t need it, you don’t need it on.
2. Buy recycled paper, print double-sided and encourage staff to use electronic documents not paper ones. Also if possible try to send items via the internet rather than the post.
3. Encourage car pooling by offering car pool passes, which allow those partaking in the scheme a guaranteed spot right outside the office.
4. You can buy products to fit in your toilet reservoirs to reduce the amount of water they use. Also don’t leave taps dripping; a drop a second can waste 10,000 liters per year.
5. Use glasses and mugs rather than disposable cups.
6. Try to source products and supplies from local companies and distributors. The further an item needs to travel, the higher the carbon cost to your company.
7. Don’t just recycle but re-use, if an item can be fixed, why not try and fix it rather than buying a new one.
8. If you can, let yourself or some of your staff work from home a couple days a week, this can reduce the amount of carbon expended by the daily travel to work.
9. When using portable technology use rechargeable batteries as much as you can.
10. Finally when you by electrical goods, windows, insulation and heating system in the UK look out for the Energy Saving Trust Recommended label.
