New business flows into Ashington

A Northumberland business specialising in the supply of state of the art packaging machines has expanded and moved into new, larger premises in Ashington.

GSP (UK) Ltd imports specialised flowrappers and automatic wrapping systems for food and non-food items from their factory in the Italian mountain town of Schio. The machines are used extensively in bakeries, food processing plants and other industries where hygiene and integrity considerations are paramount while wrapping products.

The business has moved from its previous location in Blyth to a brand new, spacious unit on Ashington’s North Seaton Industrial Estate and MD Kevin Donnelly from Ellington has high hopes for the business’s future.

“This year has been great for us,” he said. “Our new distribution and service centre is ideally placed for our engineers and sales staff to serve the north of the England and Scotland while our engineers based in the Southern Counties can handle the growing amount of machines we are installing down there.”

The good news doesn’t stop there for Kevin and his team.

“We’ve also just employed Sharon Temple as our UK Sales Director and we also have a Business Development Manager who is based in both Newcastle and Boston, Massachusetts to tackle the emerging USA market too. In the coming months, we plan to take on new engineering staff if business continues to grow as expected.”

GSP’s latest contracts have seen a number of machines being installed into a major bakery in the North West and an order has just been placed for a large independent bakery in Ireland. GSP flowrappers are individually made to a client’s specification and can handle a wealth of applications from pies to grapes, bread to cakes and bandages to plastic pipes. Each machine is capable of wrapping hundreds of items per minute without any human intervention ensuring that strict hygiene standards are maintained within the processing area.

To open the new premises, Wansbeck MP, Ian Lavery visited to cut the traditional ribbon and to see for himself the wide ranging applications that the flowrapping machines can handle.

“It’s very encouraging to see a relatively new business expand in such a short period of time,” he said. “I’m delighted that GSP chose Ashington as their UK and Ireland base and the fact that they are bringing extra jobs to the town is an added bonus,” he said.
