Are ‘mini-jobs’ really a sustainable route to growth?
The Treasury has suggested the creation of “mini-jobs” may be a worthwhile measure to boost economic growth.
As a German idea, mini-jobs exempt workers from tax and national insurance payments, and allow employers to pay a flat rate to cover pensions, social insurance and taxes.
Workers can earn up to €400 per month without having to pay taxes. Some detractors have said this traps people on the peripheries of full-time employment in a continuum of short-term, low-paid work that offers little in the way of progression.
So, would mini-jobs work for the UK?
