Our trio of tips for a top training

Our trio of tips for a top training environment

When planning a training session for your employees, one of the most overlooked aspects is the training room and getting the right conditions to aid the learning process. By getting the basics right, you can ensure that you and your people get the most out of your training. Below we list the 3 environmental factors that our trainers have highlighted as having the biggest effect on delegate’s learning.

  1. Natural light is a great aid to concentration. Whenever possible make sure that the room you choose for your training has a good source of natural light. Whether this is through skylights or windows, natural light has been proven to aid concentration, reduce eyestrain, increase productivity and even decrease absenteeism in the workplace. People function better in light filled environments.

  2. Get the room temperature right. Just like Goldilocks, it wants to be just right, not too hot and not too cold. This sounds easy but is often one of the most difficult factors to get right as it is often down to the individual delegate’s preferences, and everyone is different. If you want to be scientific about it, according to G.F. McVey in the ‘Handbook of Research for Educational Communications and Technology’, Chapter 36: ‘the research has shown the following conditions as preferred: Room Temperature: 69.5 degrees F. (20.8 Celsius) Relative humidity: 47%.’ For those not so scientifically minded, we recommend that the room has a thermostat so that the temperature can be adjusted to suit delegate’s needs.

  3. Space. Not the final frontier but the often overlooked aspect of making sure that the training room you use is big enough for the number of people attending. This may sound simple but you would be surprised how many times twelve people and a trainer are expected to manage in a ten person conference room. As a rule of thumb, book a training room that has 25% more capacity than you think you will need. So if you have 9 people and a trainer, make sure that the room can hold at least 13 people. Of course, remember to take in to account the type of training that is taking place - first aid training will require a lot more space!
