Is digital the way forward for retailers?
Retailers in the UK are increasingly digitising the experience of shopping, not only as an online, at-home way of consuming, but actually within stores.
Tesco launched its first ‘virtual shop’ earlier this month in London Gatwick’s departures lounge to allow holidaymakers to order food for their arrival home, while M&S’s new Northern flagship store in Cheshire has been kitted out with iPads, digital shopping ‘hubs’ and 70 inch display screens.
Clearly, this is not a trend but a technique that is here to stay, as retailers make moves to improve the ease and efficiency of the way customers shop by integrating new technology into shops.
Is the combination of shopping online in-store the new innovation in retail, and is the investment worth it? or is it simply a fad that will not benefit businesses long term?
