Carlisle United stadium plans halted by council

Carlisle United’s plans to build a new stadium in the city may have to be put on hold, following council discussions.

The club heard on Friday that a report into the development will say that plans for extra retail units at Kingsmoor are unnecessary, but would have been vital to support the build.

Although the council’s report has not been issued, CUFC indicated that developments would be limited to a shopping space of 200,000 sq ft, which would be insufficient to enable construction.

The programmed, named ‘Project Blue Yonder’, may not go ahead if the council’s advice is adopted by local development frameworks.

Carlisle United said the news was “really disappointing, after what amounts to over two years of work and costs.”

In a previous statement at the beginning of August, the club announced: “During the last two years the officers and councillors we have consulted have been extremely supportive of the project and have helped to point us in the right direction.”

CUFC have since heard that the stadium development may not be possible under currents plans, after a report carried out by Manchester based GVA.
