Men’s Health appoints Smoking Gun PR

Consumer sports PR and social media agency, Smoking Gun, has been awarded the task of driving entries to Manchester’s inaugural Men’s Health Survival of the Fittest event on 3 November.

Upto 4,500 urban runners will take on a 10km course which uses the city’s urban landscape in a series of challenges and obstacles, with entrants running solo or in teams of ten. The race is open to anyone aged 16 and over.

The race utilises two key areas of the city, with half the race in the Sport City complex and half around Phillips Park and Clayton Vale. Entrants will set off in waves and face 15 different zones, each containing a number of challenges ranging from parkour to army obstacles, hay walls to bespoke gigantic structures built to reflect Manchester’s industrial heritage.

Smoking Gun PR has been tasked with raising awareness of the event and educating target consumers about this race with a difference. Alongside a taster demo event in Spinningfields, the agency has drafted in Coronation Street star Ryan Thomas to act as an ambassador. The agency is also advising on media relations, media partnerships and social media content creation and influencer outreach.

The event is part of a national series run by Rat Race Adventures whose managing director, Jim Mee, said:

“Smoking Gun PR has already proved its credentials to us and we are delighted to be working in partnership with them to deliver this first Manchester event. They understood our brief and the team’s response gave a clear framework, mixing creative ideas with solid media planning and an understanding of the local stakeholder groups we wish to engage.”

Rick Guttridge, managing director at Smoking Gun PR, comments:

“Men’s Health is a major brand name which any business would be happy to work alongside and this unique urban race series has been put together in way that makes telling its story a wonderful PR opportunity.

“We’re well versed in sports and event based campaigns and can’t wait to see this sports mad city take up this new challenge. Securing Ryan, who is fitness mad, to be part of the campaign is a coup and we’ll really see if the Olympics has inspired Mancunians to try a new sport.”

The announcement is the latest in a series of high profile account wins and award commendations for the fast growing Spinningfields based team.
