The Role of a Client Partner

As I reached my final year of university it seemed like there was a constant fear going round of what was going to happen next, or worse, a lack thereof. The prospect of becoming a fully fledged tax payer seems to come around all too quickly for a lot of graduates, when all of a sudden your life in education has come to end. What are you to do next? If you do know what you want then how will you get your dream job? I like to think I’m one of the lucky ones. I had my first interview for hedgehog lab two days after graduation and three weeks later I started work. In the blink of an eye I went from university to full time employment! I’ve been here for a month now so I thought I’d share some of my experiences.

First a little explanation about what it is I’m doing here. When I got the job some friends asked if I was working at a hedgehog hospital or as a vet and as fun as that sounds that isn’t quite in my job description! My position as Client Partner is brand new to the lab and it is an exciting challenge for me to help shape the role. In a nutshell, I manage communication between the designers and developers on the team and the client to make sure that our projects run as smoothly as possible. I serve as a point of contact if a client has any questions and do my best to find a solution to any problems. On a day to day basis I email clients to keep them up to date with the status of their project and liase with the team at the lab to ensure that deadlines are being met.

In my second week I had to travel to London with Sarat to be formally introduced to a client who I now manage every day. As a large proportion of our client base is in London as I become more established in my role I will have to make regular trips which I think may quickly become one of my favourite parts of the role! I love being based in Newcastle but it is definitely a perk of the job to have the opportunity to travel to London regularly.

Since my job is so new to both me and the company I feel like if you asked me in six months time to describe what it is I do the answer may be completely different. That is one of the (many!) benefits of working for hedgehog lab as everyone has the opportunity to find their feet and make their job their own. I’m really looking forward to taking on more responsibility and forming more relationships with clients. Who knows where this job will take me next? … Maybe I’ll come back in 6 months and tell you all about it.
