MCPS scoop top South Tyneside Business Award

Business of the Year 2012 has been awarded to marine protection company MCPS at the South Tyneside Business Awards.

MCPS was recognised at the awards ceremony after a series of successes in exporting, expansion and innovation this year.

Based in South Shields, the firm produces anodes which prevent rusting and corrosion from sea water on offshore wind farms.

The company has grown significantly since establishing itself in 2008, and now exports to clients in Germany, Ireland and Dubai, while plans are being set in motion to branch out into the European renewables market.

Owner, Glenn English commented: “We started the business from nothing and it was a real challenge to establish ourselves and win people’s respect in the industry.”

“There is huge potential for the offshore and renewables sector in South Tyneside and my biggest hope now is to build further success and contribute to economic growth in the North East.”

South Tyneside council rewarded the firm’s efforts in a ceremony hosted by BBC Look North’s Jeff Brown, in front of 300 local businesses.

South Shields prides itself as a strong region for engineering and manufacturing, and MPCS were congratulated for contributing to the success of the area.

Iain Malcolm, Leader of South Tyneside Council, said:“Regeneration, jobs and economic growth are at the heart of our vision for the future, and South Tyneside’s business community is playing a vital role in making it a reality.

“The past two years have seen significant progress, with 5,500 more residents in employment and an increasing number in self-employment.”

Sponsors of the event included South Tyneside Council, BT South Tyneside, Law firm Port of Tyne, and Newcastle International Airport, amongst many other businesses in the area.
