North East specialists called in to London landmarks

Darlington-based Stone Technical Services has seen demand for its specialist high level repair and maintenance services in the London area double in the last six months as it takes on more projects working on high profile structures.

Thanks to its reputation as one of leaders in its field in the UK, Stone has secured three significant contracts.

Battersea power station is one of the most recognised sites in South West London and it was recently announced that the decommissioned coal-fired power station would undergo an £8 billion development scheme to convert the listed building into Thames-side shops, offices homes and a hotel. Stone will be completing lightning protection testing on the four iconic chimney stacks, around 330 feet in height, and the main building itself.

Close to the Olympic Village in East London, Stone is carrying out condition surveys at Eagle Wharf, a waterside development on the Regent’s Canal which is home to film and photography studios, executive apartments and restaurants.

And to the south-east of London, Stone is working in Dartford carrying out a major inspection of a Victorian listed chimney at a former paper mill, which is now a residential area, in the village of Horton Kirby.

Stone is one of the most highly-accredited businesses in its sector which has helped with its growth especially in the London region. The company’s London office, close to Piccadilly Circus, has seen an increasing influx of contracts throughout 2012 following the successful completion of projects on high profile buildings such as the Royal Courts of Justice, Westminster Abbey, Selfridges on Oxford Street and St Paul’s Cathedral.

Managing director, Dave Stone, said: “London is a really important growth area for our business, not least because it is the capital but also because it is full of historic buildings that need the type of specialist care that we can offer. We’re working on everything from well-known tourist attractions to huge industrial chimneys and this is helping to boost our profile in the very competitive London and South East markets.”

Stone Technical Services, which recently announced the opening of its Edinburgh office, is one of the UK’s most accredited specialists and works with high profile organisations such as INEOS Plant Utilities at Seal Sands, Teesside Power Station, English Heritage, the National Trust, the NHS, British Waterways and Network Rail to carry out a range of maintenance, safety and conservation projects.

In addition, the family-run business is the approved contractor managing lightning protection on St Paul’s Cathedral and works with housing associations, historic structures, churches, war memorials, schools, offices, car parks and councils,

Darlington brothers, Dave and Grahame Stone, established Stone Technical Services in 1998 and now have offices in Edinburgh city centre, near Stockport in Cheshire, close to Piccadilly Circus in central London and Pinner in Middlesex, as well as their HQ on Kellaw Road in Darlington

Thanks to its growth, the company is planning to create a number of jobs to add to its 30 strong workforce.
