Tiger construction project won by Bristol building firm

Bristol-headquartered Base Structures will build a new tiger conservation enclosure for London zoo.

ZSL London Zoo’s £3.6m programme will create a tiger headquarters which will become five times the size of the existing structure.

Base Structures will construct the 2,500 sq ft enclosure from stainless steel net and a series of masts to make a 17m high structure.

The company has previously worked on high profile projects such as the “Up” roof walk over the o2 stadium in London, and the tent canopy at Lords cricket ground.

Endangered tigers will be housed in the new enclosure, designed by Michael Kozdon from Wharmby Kozdon Architects with ZSL’s tiger keepers, conservationists and experts.

The tigers will be enclosed with 3mm mesh which can withstand impact from a tiger running “at full pelt” and can cope under all weather conditions for 100 years.

Andy Traynor, head of installations at Base Structures said: “We’re proud to be a major part of this high profile conservation project,

“We have been involved with a lot of zoos and it’s great to be able to apply our experience to help save this rare and special breed of tigers.”

Base Structures have been involved with building enclosures for Bristol Zoo, Twycross and Le Pal in France, as well as multiple projects across Europe.

ZSL’s project will focus on conserving the Sumatran tiger, which is the smallest of the five remaining species of tiger on the planet, with only 300 of the species remaining.
