Workers benefit by becoming moneywise

A Newcastle community project has become the first to team up with moneywise credit union to help people get more out of their money. Practicing what they preach, the staff team at JET (Jobs Education & Training) are joining the credit union, as well as encouraging their learners to become members.

“The great thing about moneywise is that it’s not just for people with low incomes,” said Julie Fernyhough, JET Chief Executive: “People on Benefits can use credit unions very easily to manage their money, so it’s great for many of our service users. But with offers like interest-free loans on annual travel passes, household goods and home improvement loans, JET workers can get a lot out of their membership, too! JET are keen to offer as many benefits to their employees as possible and this is the one of the opportunities we are keen to promote.”

“We are delighted to see such enthusiasm from a community organisation, said Andrew Breese, moneywise Chief Executive. “As the largest credit union in the North East, moneywise is proud to be able to develop innovative ways of working with voluntary and community groups in Tyne & Wear to meet the needs of local people. Our new Trusted Partner scheme is just part of that innovation.”

Councillor Joyce McCarty, Deputy Leader of Newcastle City Council and the lead member for financial inclusion said: “By signing up to moneywise it now means the JET team and their members can now save and access money safely and in confidence. It is important that whatever your income, there are schemes like this which can support some of our city’s most vulnerable people and help you plan for the future.”

JET staff signed up at a celebration on Wed 19 September at their Grainger Park Road office. The project enables local people from the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities to overcome disadvantage and fulfil their potential by accessing training opportunities, improving skills, seeking employment and integrating into their community.
