University expands city centre accommodation with Danieli Group
Newcastle University has unveiled a new £6m flagship student housing development east of the city centre.
Students have been welcomed into the 2,000 sq ft accommodation block in Shieldfield, which was renovated by owners Danieli Holdings from a social club into 105 student flats.
Barker House has been leased for five years from the North East-based firm, which has divisions in healthcare, security and training as well as a student accomodation arm.
A mix of undergraduates and postgraduates were the first to move into the building, in Danieli Group’s first venture into student property development.
The Newcastle-headquartered business has a turnover of £15m, and the company said it hopes to continue to grow in the North East.
Neill Winch, chief executive of the Danieli Group, said: “It’s been a lengthy project and we’re delighted to have completed the build on time and successfully handed the building over to Newcastle University and its students.
“We’re very proud to be working with Newcastle University and look forward to developing the relationship over the next five years and beyond.
Newcastle University’s accommodation services manager, Vivienne Robinson, added: “We’re very happy to add this property to our portfolio. It’s a first class facility very close to the city centre and will house a mix of returning students and new postgraduates.
“Newcastle University is continuing to grow and attract new students from all over the world and it’s important we have a range of high quality facilities and locations available for our students.”
Danieli’s chief commented further that the company will make additional changes to the site facilities and amenities over the next year.
