Network Rail take over Peugeot car plant

A former Peugeot car plant has been taken over by Network Rail, which plans to turn the 300,000 sq ft site into a road haulage distribution centre.

Jobs in construction will be created by through the plans, and 100 posts at the £25m centre will also be opened up.

The ex-factory, which closed in 2006, is located at Ryton in the West Midlands, and Network Rail will use it as a central base to access the main train lines, with direct routes to the A45 and the motorway network.

Martin Elwood, director of Network Rail, commented: “Network Rail’s first preference is to transport goods by rail. This is not always the right solution so we have an extensive road fleet to transport goods and equipment to our work sites and depots.

“By bringing the logistics for this together at Ryton we can offer a more effective and efficient service for Network Rail. This will mean reduced costs and faster turnaround times when we do work on the railway.”

Costs of the railway will be significantly reduced as a result of the acquisition, as the organisation sheds its leases on centres in Lichfield, Worcester and Ludgershall.

Network Rail will also reduce its carbon footprint by cutting down the firm’s road fleet mileage from a centralised location when it opens in July 2013.
