Younger generation fail to Learn ?manly? skills
A new generation of men are failing to learn basic ‘manly’ skills such as changing a car tyre, a survey reveals. One in five (20%) of men aged 24 or under also admitted they’d “never” got their hands dirty by doing household tasks or DIY.The poll, by JCB Toughphones, revealed that only 15% know how to jump start a car, 17% to change a tyre and 28% to change a plug. Those in the 25-34 age group faired marginally better but were similarly deskilled compared with older men.In contrast, younger men revealed they were far more at home in the kitchen with over 70% knowing how to bake a cake.Men aged 45 and older possess a superior knowledge of all manly jobs than their younger counterparts, with three-quarters of men aged 55 and above knowing how to tackle to more challenging tasks such as wallpapering.Jason Kemp of JCB Toughphones says: “It appears the younger generation of men are becoming deskilled in more traditional ‘manly’ type jobs.“Older men were probably able to pick up these skills more easily in the past, while younger men have more distractions these days.“Practical skills have also become less important for people who choose to work smarter.“For more information on JCB Toughphones and the new Pro-Smart and Sitemaster 2 visit www.jcbtoughphones.co.uk
