Healing gel is a winner for Team GB
Seaham-born, mature student and mum of one, Esther Byrom has studied a BSc in Biology and an MSc in Biotechnology at the University of Sunderland. She was inspired to find out more about germs after her son become seriously ill with pneumonia in his early years. Esther said “I was desperately worried for my son’s health and wellbeing, and not being able to understand what the doctors were explaining to me just added to the anxiety. It was at this point I decided to study science at the University of Sunderland, so that I had a better understanding of my son’s illness”.
Esther, a horse lover, acquired a beautiful thoroughbred that routinely injures himself after being turned out in the field, something all too common with this particular breed of horse. On average, it would take up to three-months for a wound to heal. After trying several remedies, many of which would cause stress and anxiety to the horse, Esther decided she would address the problem head-on by applying her scientific knowledge towards finding a better cure.
By conducting research into the natural antibiotic, colloidal silver, then combining this with the aloe Vera plant and an additional antibacterial cleaning agent hibiscrub, her new healing gel was developed.
After testing the gel on her own thoroughbred, Esther was pleasantly surprised to see that not only was her horse was more than tolerant of the gel being applied, but the healing process had been dramatically reduced to just four-weeks, from a potential three-months.
Esther decided to create samples for other horse lovers who faced similar situations with their own horses, to see if they too found the gel equally as effective. Since then, Esther has received tremendous feedback from veterinary practitioners and riders’ in the Olympic Team GB who have endorsed her new healing gel, claiming that it heals 50-60% faster than more traditional products on the market.
Esther’s and her EasyCare4U business will compete against students and recent alumni from the five North East Universities at the 2012 Blueprint Regional Grand Final. “My motivation for entering the business planning competition is not simply to win the prize money, but more as a personal challenge to prove that I am able to take an idea, develop it, and come up with an end product”.
