Gin Emporium is just the tonic
A NORTH East restaurant will prove a real tonic for customers when it unveils possibly the largest range of gins in the region.
Mrs Mustard, at Saddler Street, Durham, which opened earlier this year and is named in honour of the woman who invented mustard powder in the 1720s, is continuing its tribute to the 18thcentury with the launch of The Gin Emporium.
The Emporium, which will be officially opened within the restaurant on Friday, October 26, will not only stock a wide range of gin brands but will also use the juniper-based spirit as the basis of a large variety of cocktails.
In addition to well- known brands such as Tanqueray and Bombay, The Gin Emporium will stock a diverse selection of botanical gins flavoured with herbs such as thyme and rosemary as well as spices - such as cardamom - and ingredients ranging from coconut to ginger, rose petals and cucumber.
First introduced to England by the Dutch in the mid-1600s, gin – or genever –quickly took over from ale as the drink of choice for men and women of all classes.
By the mid 1700s – when the craze for mustard powder, made by Mrs Clements just yards away from where Mrs Mustard now stands, was also sweeping the country – gin palaces could be found on every street corner.
“Absolutely everyone drank gin then,” said restaurant owner Harvey Morgan “and we hope The Gin Emporium will put this versatile drink back in the spotlight.
“Although few of our restaurant dishes contain mustard we offer such a range of mustards as an accompaniment that there is generally one to suit every diner - and we hope we’ll be able to do the same with The Gin Emporium.
“Hopefully it will encourage people who’ve never tried gin – or never liked it - to give it a go.”
