Trade deficit narrows into September
The UK’s trade deficit narrowed significantly in September, as the volume of exports was 4.1% higher in the third quarter.
The deficit on goods and services was estimated at £2.7bn in September, compared with a deficit of £4.3bn in August. In Q3, the overall deficit was estimated to have been £8.5bn, compared with a deficit of £10bn in the preceding quarter.
The figures came at the same time as those from the construction industry, showing output in the third quarter fell by 2.6% compared with the second quarter.
The private sector contributed most significantly to the decline, offset slightly be an increase in new infrastructure work of 9.9%.Estimated volumes of new work fell by 14.5% in the third quarter, while repair and maintenance fell by 4.8% over the same period.
