SES supports school safety talk

Pupils from Percy Main Primary School, North Shields, were recently taught the importance of being seen and safe, particularly when crossing the road, when Liz Moore, North Tyneside’s Road Safety Officer, visited the school.

The talk, which was supported by Shepherd Engineering Services (SES) one of the UK’s leading building services contractors, also taught the children about the dangers of playing in or around building sites.

As part of a nationwide corporate social responsibility initiative, which SES will roll out across its network of seven offices, the company donated over 100 high visibility jackets to the school – one for each student in Reception and Key Stage One classes.

Delighted by the donation, the school intends to use the jackets when students are out and about on school trips, when they undertake their regular visits to the Meadows Community Centre and at Eco Club – a weekly after school club which sees the children learning about sustainability, nature and the environment by taking care of the school’s gardens and vegetable plots.

Speaking about the safety talk and generous donation, deputy head teacher, Donna Callaghan said:

“The children were extremely excited when they saw the hi-vis vests and couldn’t wait to try them on. Teaching our students to be safe is important. We warn them about the dangers of crossing the road, playing where they shouldn’t such as on building sites or near water and being able to provide them with the vests supports them in this and helps them to retain the information. We are very grateful to SES for its kind contribution.”

SES’s regional director Steve Joyce, whose office is located close to the school, said:

“As part of our ongoing corporate social responsibility policy, SES engages with the local community, both close to our office and at our sites around the region, in a number of different ways. I hope the children get lots of use from the vests. This is a small but important contribution to make and if it keeps one child safe then it will be worthwhile. We hope to be involved further with the school in relation to other initiatives they are planning for the year ahead.”

The north east office is the first of SES’s seven offices to launch this initiative this year and it follows on from a similar successful project the company undertook last year.
