Nortech Employee Scoops Awards at University Graduation

A Nortech Group employee has scooped three Structural Design and Engineering awards in recognition of his work while studying at Teesside University.

Peter Herrell, from Redcar, was awarded the Cecil M Yuill Prize, the John Henderson Design Prize and The Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) Student Prize, after graduating from the Civil Engineering course at Teesside University.

Each of the awards recognises a different aspect of excellence in a student’s design and construction work.

Peter has been in the Structural Design Industry for 12 years, working for oil and gas companies based in the North East and Aberdeen prior to taking up his role as a Civil Structural Engineer at Nortech Group, the professional engineering design and project management company based at Wynyard, Stockton-On-Tees, last September.

Peter, 31, said: “To have my work recognised by my tutors and respected organisations like the Institution of Structural Engineers is extremely humbling.

“Gaining the awards is very pleasing, they are a great pay off for the hard work that I put in during my degree.”

Steve Bloomer, Principal Lecturer in Civil Engineering at Teesside University, said: “Peter was an excellent student who always sought a full understanding of the topics he studied.

“His work was always professionally presented and of a very high standard and this is reflected in the number of awards he received. We are proud to say that Peter is one of our graduates.”

Bryan Bunn, Managing Director of Nortech Group, said: “I’m delighted that Peter has done so well in his studies and been recognised for his achievements.

“I’m very pleased to welcome him to our team, and I’m sure he’ll make a very positive contribution to the work we do here. There is a wealth of talent in this region, and we are always very pleased when we can recruit locally to bolster our team.”

The IStructE award is given to the student with the best final year performance in a Structural Engineering related analysis or design. The John Henderson Design Prize recognises the student with the best performance in an area of Civil Engineering Design. The Cecil M Yuill Prize rewards achievement in any field of construction by a student born in the North East or North Yorkshire.

Nortech Group has gone from strength to strength after being established by highly respected engineer Bryan Bunn - who has substantial experience in the oil & gas, petrochemical, chemical, nuclear, iron and steel sectors - in April 2011. The firm, which now employs 65 members of staff, serves the process, offshore, onshore oil & gas, steel and iron industries.
