Cleveland Centre toilets are flushed with success

WE’RE used to parting with our cash there, but a shopping centre’s toilets have been declared the perfect place to spend a penny.

The luxurious lavvies at The Cleveland Centre in Middlesbrough have struck gold in the 2012 Loo of the Year awards.

The annual ceremony – which celebrated its 25th anniversary this year – recognises tremendous toilets up and down the land. The Cleveland Centre’s facilities won a Gold Award with judges commending the loos for high standards in décor and maintenance, cleanliness, accessibility and hand-washing facilities.

Debbie Anderson, manager of The Cleveland Centre, said: “This is a fantastic award to win because it shows we have the highest standards across the Centre, be that the toilets, the waste bins, the events we put on and the shops we have here.

“Coming to The Cleveland Centre should always be a positive experience and excellent toilet facilities are essential to that. I’m delighted for our fantastic cleaning team - Winnie, Claire, Margaret, Sue, Ian and David - who put in a tremendous effort across the year to make sure the toilets are spotless, accessible and welcoming.”

The Loo of the Year awards are aimed at highlighting and improving standards of ‘away from home’ toilet provision across the UK. Authorised inspectors make unannounced visits to hundreds of toilets at sites across the country, with facilities graded from bronze to gold with unacceptable toilets not graded at all.

The awards were presented at a glittering ceremony in Birmingham last Friday night by comedienne Shappi Khorsandi.

The Loo of the Year Awards 2012 managing director, Mike Bone, said: “The toilets at The Cleveland Centre are equipped to a very high standard and are both clean and well maintained. They richly deserve their Gold Award.”
