Business births up 11.2% last year
The number of businesses created in the UK increased by 11.2% between 2010 and 2011, while “business deaths” were down by nearly 8% in the same period.
London had the highest number of business births in the country, at a rate of 14.6% , while the North West fell victim to the most business death at a rate of 10.7%.
In 2011, 261,000 businesses registered themselves in the UK, in comparison with 235,000 in 2010.
Statistics from ONS showed that 2.34m companies were active in the UK during 2011, showing an overall decrease of 8,800 year-on-year.
The information and communication sector fared the best, with a business birth rate of 14.8%, while the professional industries reported a rate of 14.3%.
Business administration and support services had the highest rate of businesses de-registering at 11.5%, followed by insurance and financial services at 11.5%.
Science and technology businesses incurred the most overall business deaths with 39,000 deregistering, while construction suffered a loss of 35,000 companies, and support services lost 25,000.
