Walsh wins the inaugural City Index Trading Academy

A client services executive training to be a taxi driver has won City Index’s first Trading Academy after outperforming seven other competitors over a period of six weeks.

Judged by a panel of experts consisting of City Index’s own Global Chief Strategist Ashraf Laidi and Chief Technical Analyst James Chen, the Academy pitted together eight people with little or no real trading experience and they competed against each other to win a massive cash prize.

John Walsh emerged victorious overall and became £100,000 better off after defeating freelance journalist Ryan Oliver-Thompson and recruitment Consultant Shazad Asher in the final.

Oliver-Thompson and Asher both received runner-up prizes of £5,000 deposited in a City Index trading account having reached the last three of the competition, which was designed to teach aspiring traders how to trade following expert guidance from Laidi and Chen.

Martin Belsham, City Index the Chief Executive, also joined the judging panel for the final challenge as Walsh again showed himself to be the leading candidate.

Walsh delivered an impressive 23.6% return on investment for his final week, and managed to trade himself out of losing positions on multiple occasions.

Laidi lauded Walsh’s achievements, as he said: “The message at the heart of Trading Academy is that if you are disciplined and committed to embracing the educational element, you can have a successful trading experience and it was very pleasing to see all of the competitors making such significant strides in a short period of time.

“John won not only because he had the best ROI, but his willingness to continue learning and then applying this to his trading throughout was what impressed the judges the most.”

Walsh won his grand prize in City Hall, in the City of London, where he hopes to be driving his black cab in the near future after revealing he is not giving up on taxi-driving dream despite the win.

Walsh beamed: “It’s been a great experience and I’m definitely going to be the Black Cabbie trader from now on!

“I never thought that over such a short period, I could learn so much about trading. The financial markets can seem so daunting, but the right support, anyone can develop the skills and confidence to trade.”
