Manufacturer leads landmark energy efficiency study

Windows and doors maker H Jarvis has played a key role in a major university study which has shown how using certain construction components can reduce home energy usage by 72%.

The business, based in Redcar, Cleveland, was enlisted by GLASSOLUTIONS to work on Nottingham University’s groundbreaking piece of research into the impact housing design can have on energy usage.

Using specially designed EcoClear sealed units with high performance triple glazed windows, the company proved how extremely energy efficient housing design – known as Passivhaus - can deliver as much as 72% energy savings when tested in real life conditions.

H Jarvis provided technical and manufacturing support on the test, which was set up to demonstrate the difference in energy use between a property built to 2006 building regulations and today’s Passivhaus standard.

H Jarvis MD Dave Glendinning said: “We’ve been manufacturing and installing PVC-U windows for the new build and refurbishment markets with a 0.8 U-value windows for more than five years now so we know exactly how effective they are in driving up energy efficiency in our homes.

“Despite the genuine demand in the market for low energy solutions like our 0.8 windows and doors, independent testing such as this latest project by Nottingham University plays a vital role in encouraging even wider acceptance.”

The results of the test showed that a student living overnight in a Passivhaus pod used just 28% of the energy that used by the student occupying the Part L 2006 pod during the same period.

The EcoClear sealed unit used in the study was manufactured by GLASSOLUTIONS Solaglas, whose marketing director Mike Butterick said of the study: “The results confirm our view that triple glazing used with a highly insulated building envelope can help save pounds on household energy bills.”
