Kier Property sees the sunniside at Sunderland scheme

Kier Property has boosted Sunderland City Centre with the opening of a 82-bedroom Travelodge hotel at a £6m leisure, entertainment and retail development.

The announcement marks the practical completion of the third phase of the Sunniside development, a joint venture between Kier Property and developer Calmont, which is located in the City’s prime leisure and entertainment quarter.

The hotelier joins occupiers such as Nandos, Frankie & Benny’s, Gala Casino, First Bowl and Empire Cinemas, which have already signed up to phases one and two of the Sunniside development.

Two additional ground floor retail/leisure units are now being promoted at the four-storey development. Both newly constructed units, which are 4,670sq ft and 2,230sq ft in size, have open planning consent ready for a complementary retailer or operator to further strengthen the offering at Sunniside.

Kier Property senior development manager, James Nicholson, said: “We are delighted to have completed the new Travelodge hotel on time, on budget and to a very high standard. This marks our continued investment in the area as we help to develop Sunniside as the principal leisure and entertainment quarter within Sunderland City Centre. With its unrivalled location, direct access from the university’s campus and halls of residence, the site is ideally positioned to attract business into the area.”

Sunderland High Street West’s hotel manager, Bill Johnson, said: “By attracting new visitors to Sunderland High Street West Travelodge, we will boost the local economy by £1.2m as our research shows the average Travelodge customer will spend on average £36 a day in local shops, restaurants and bars during their stay.”

The ground floor leisure, retail and office opportunities in the development are being marketed by Lofthouse and Partners and BNP Paribas.
