Tooled up for training

A new training centre, run by Sunderland College, is providing the tradesmen and women of the future with the tools they need to succeed thanks to a range of vocational courses.

The Blue Square training centre in Boldon, South Tyneside offers training in motor vehicle mechanics, bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, painting and decorating, welding and plumbing, with the aim of helping students find work in the construction and engineering sector.

Prospective students and employers looking for courses tailored to their needs are invited to an open day on Monday, January 28 where the centre will be officially opened and certificates awarded to the first students who have already completed courses.

Backed by the Weldability Sif Foundation – who have made a considerable investment in the provision of new welding equipment – the centre boasts excellent training facilities and first class tutors, giving its students sought-after skills in a competitive sector.

The courses can be adapted to suit the needs of individual employers and are designed to give students the skills they need for a lifelong career.

Gary Cumiskey, director of vocational skills at Sunderland College, said: “Sunderland College has been working closely with the relevant industries to develop courses that teach the skills that employers need and as a result, give students the best possible start to their careers.

“The courses have already proved popular with many students signing up although some spaces are still available.”

Prospective students and employers are encouraged to attend the open day, with Weldability SIF CEO Arian Hawkins already confirmed as a guest.

Adrian said: “We are proud to be part of such an important training centre that will help secure the future of the industry and lead to more highly skilled individuals receiving top jobs in welding – a career that can take you anywhere in the world.

“The new training centre and the money we’re putting into it represents an investment and belief in the future of British engineering.”

The next set of courses starting later this month are open to anyone and are free to those who are currently claiming job seekers allowance.
