Trinity South regeneration programme makes good progress

The regeneration of Trinity South as part of the South Shields Riverside Development programme is making good progress with the demolition of several buildings in the West Holborn area of the Borough.

The first phase of demolition has included the former Foremost Garage and The Commercial Hotel.

The Commercial Hotel is one of South Shields’s oldest public houses with local people recognising its heritage values, with this in mind, South Tyneside Council and site contractors Owen Pugh (Contracts Ltd) have brought in the services of an architecture salvour, to ensure any important structures are saved for potential reuse.

The complete Trinity South project will be a mixed use neighbourhood of housing, commercial and leisure. The Commercial Hotel site has been earmarked for potential industrial use.

The three South Tyneside Council ward members for Simonside and Rekendyke, Councillor Ed Malcolm, Councillor Michael Clare and Councillor Lynne Proudlock, have been instrumental in the development of the area and all welcome the progress being made.

Councillor Ed Malcolm of South Tyneside Council, said: “The demolition work at Holborn is an important part of the overall Trinity South regeneration programme. It symbolises the Council’s commitment to redeveloping the area, benefiting residents, their families and the business community.”

The first clearance phase of demolition at Holborn is expected to be complete over the next two weeks.
