Recycling company joins forces with shopping centre
WASTE management company J & B Recycling has been awarded a significant new contract with one of the region’s largest shopping centres.
J & B Recycling will manage the waste portfolio of Middleton Grange Shopping Centre in Hartlepool after the centre’s management team decided to review its current set up to see how energy efficient and environmentally friendly it was.
The company, which is based at Thomlinson Road in Hartlepool, will be responsible for all waste generated by Middleton Grange and its 140 tenants.
Mark Penny, Commercial Manager at J & B Recycling, said: “We were particularly keen to work with Middleton Grange because they’re a big name in Hartlepool and for us as a company, working with other local enterprises is important.
“Once we’d met the Middleton Grange team and built up that confidence and trust, we came up with a proposal which we felt best matched their needs as they were keen to be more environmentally friendly and reduce the amount of waste which ends up in landfill.”
Middleton Grange is already noticing significant improvements to the way its waste is managed.
The Centre’s Manager Mark Rycraft said: “We were considering looking at our waste management programme as many tonnes of waste are generated from the Centre every year, so we wanted to make sure what we had in place was as efficient as it could be.
“We also have our own targets to reduce carbon emissions through the transportation of our waste, so working with a local company was very important to us.
“We’re already noticing the difference in costs, which have been reduced by around 20 per cent and that means tenants will notice the difference too.”
On the back of the early success of the partnership, J & B Recycling has awarded Middleton Grange Shopping Centre with a Zero Waste to Landfill accreditation.
The amount and different types of waste that are recycled has already been increased, with a range of brand new colour coded bins being introduced to make things easier. Plans devised jointly by the Middleton Grange team and J & B Recycling are already in place to increase this even further over the next few months.
