Vela Group strikes gold with top health award
The Vela Group has been given a clean bill of health after being awarded a top accolade for its promotion of health and wellbeing.
The housing group, which incorporates Tristar Homes and Housing Hartlepool, achieved the Gold level of the North East Better Health at Work awards as part of its commitment to promoting health within the work place as well as the wider community.
Since being awarded the Silver level last year, further campaigns have been undertaken to benefit staff, including:
• Running a variety of different Cancer Awareness Road Shows throughout the year including at customer events
• Heart start sessions offering basic life support and CPR methods
• Flu vaccinations
• Supporting No Smoking Day
• Participating in the Housing Community Games – a regionally organised sporting event.
A main focus for Vela throughout 2013 will be working towards the Continuing Excellence level of the award which involves supporting and mentoring other organisations that are hoping to achieve this accolade.
Public Health North East, the external assessors of the award, commended Vela for its policies, plans and activities in helping its staff lead a healthy and positive life at work.
Bernadette Stainsby, Head of Human Resources at Vela said: “This is a fantastic achievement for the Company and shows the commitment we have to helping improve workplace health. We are now looking forward to working towards the Continuing Excellence level.
“Much of our continued success has been achieved through our creation of health advocates who have been instrumental in driving this forward within their teams and inspiring other colleagues to take part in a range of activities.”
