Free finance events for start-ups

Tickets are still available for a week of free finance events designed to give British start-ups a boost.

National enterprise campaign StartUp Britain has put together a programme of expert panels, Q & A sessions with accomplished corporate finance professionals and helpful workshops that will boost the confidence and skills of pre-start, start-up and growing businesses.

Entrepreneurs can learn to master basic financial techniques as well as gleaning more advanced information around routes to funding. There will also be a chance to hear inspiring stories from start-ups who have already seen success, and insight into the future of the British economy through the eyes of economic commentators.

The events kick-off next Monday March 25 at the ICAEW, in London, move on to Google Campus, Shoreditch, Pinners Hall, and finish with an online webinar on Thursday March 28.

StartUp Britain co-founder Emma Jones said: “Entrepreneurs have great innovative ideas and a lot of energy, but many tell me they want help with the numbers.

“Making sure the finances are in order is fundamental from the word go. It’s about getting into good habits early and keeping on top of the finances as well as knowing what lies ahead – and whether you can afford it!

“We’ve put together a really useful programme of events which will guide would-be entrepreneurs through the basics, leading on to more detailed information about crowd-funding, VC and corporate venturing for growing businesses.”

The week starts with a glimpse into the funding exploits of some prominent start-ups including ethical underwear firm Pants to Poverty and Jon Bradford from Springboard, moves onto Rupert Lee-Browne’s funding adventure which leads very nicely into start-up capital expert John Spindler’s sessions on seed finance.

Day two is designed for those in the early stages of starting up and offers insight into preparing for investment from the UK Business Angels Association, moves onto crowd-funding, evolving payment trends and the role of accelerators and incubators.

Day three looks into global expansion as a route to expand markets for growing businesses with experts including Emma Jones, before moving into forecasting, tax planning and an expert view on the British economy in the future.

Hear from social media expert David Cushman, from The Social Partners, he is a world leader in the power of the network and how it’s changing everything, Shiona Davies, from is4profit, author of the SME Finance Monitor and director at BDRC Continental on what’s happening in the financial world and Irene Graham from the British Bankers Association.

Sandwich entrepreneur and inspirational speaker Tim Roupell will be talking about his experiences in the eighties when he gave up his job as a City commodities broker to create his tasty sandwich empire Daily Bread.

On Day 4, start-ups can take part in the day’s financial fitness webinar conducted by accounting software firm Intuit. Details on this to be found here.

The week of events reflect the need for start-ups and growing businesses to grasp the fundamentals of finance for long-term growth.
