Siemens' Newcastle land 160 tonnes of work
A Canadian power plant operator has chosen Siemens’ engineers in Newcastle to refurbish one of the world’s largest generators.
The major contract win will see Siemens Energy Service Fossil work on the 160 tonne Generator Rotor, which was manufactured in Newcastle in the 1960s.
The generator was shipped to Siemens this week from Nova Scotia, via Belgium, where the rotor transferred vessels.
It will take nine months to carry out the refurbishment upgrade so that Bruce Power can use the generator as a strategic space for their station.
Graham Hartley, Siemens Energy Service managing director said: “We are delighted to be undertaking this important work for Bruce Power. We have made significant investments in our facilities and in our people over the last two decades to develop what is a world-class energy service business in Newcastle.”
A team of specialist engineers will work on the project in the Newcastle facility, which boasts retractable roofs, clean condition enclosures and filtered air supply.
It is estimated that work will be complete by December this year.
